Concrete vs Pavers for Driveways and Patios

Is it cheaper to do a paver patio or concrete? A side-by-side comparison on cost, lifespan, cracking, repairs and more, with sources, so you know what to ask before you request quotes.

Both options can be a good choice. The right one depends on your budget, the job (driveway, patio, pool deck or walkway), how you feel about cracks and repairs, and the look you want. The figures below come from HomeGuide's comparison and related pages, and they are national, not Brentwood prices.

By job

Driveways

HomeGuide lists concrete driveways for two cars at $1,200 to $4,300 and paver driveways at $5,700 to $17,200 in its comparison (HomeGuide). Other HomeGuide and Angi pages list concrete driveways higher, such as $2,400 to $6,000 for 400 square feet, so use these as a rough sense of the gap, not a quote. Pavers need a deep, well-compacted base on a driveway. See concrete driveways and paver driveways.

Patios

HomeGuide says pavers offer superior aesthetics while concrete is more budget-friendly for patios (HomeGuide). See concrete patios and paver patios.

Pool decks and walkways

Traction and heat matter near water. Ask contractors about the finish or paver type and how it behaves when wet and in the sun. See stamped concrete for decorative poured options.

Where stamped concrete sits

Stamped concrete is poured concrete with a pattern. HomeGuide lists $8 to $19 per square foot, a lifespan of 25 to 50 years with care, and resealing every 2 to 3 years (HomeGuide). It shares concrete's cracking behavior and has repair limits when colors must match. Read the stamped concrete pros and cons.

One note on asphalt

Asphalt is a different trade with different contractors, and we don't cover it on this site.

How to decide

  • Lowest cost up front: plain concrete.
  • Repairs one unit at a time: pavers.
  • A patterned look on a budget: stamped concrete, with sealing every few years.
  • Most flexible look: pavers, in more patterns and materials.
  • Heavy vehicles: either works if built right; ask about thickness (concrete) or base depth (pavers).

Common questions

Is it cheaper to do a paver patio or concrete?

Concrete is usually cheaper up front. HomeGuide lists installed concrete at $6 to $15 per square foot and pavers at $10 to $30. Pavers can be repaired one unit at a time, which may change the long-run picture.

Which lasts longer, pavers or concrete?

HomeGuide lists pavers at 25 to 75+ years and concrete at 30 to 50+ years. Lifespan depends heavily on the base, installation and upkeep, so ask contractors about their warranty terms rather than relying on a range.

Do pavers crack?

Individual pavers can chip, but HomeGuide says pavers typically do not crack from freeze-thaw cycles the way a poured slab can. Pavers can settle if the base was not deep or compacted enough.

Where does stamped concrete fit?

It sits between plain concrete and pavers: a patterned, colored surface in a poured slab. It shares concrete's cracking behavior and needs resealing every 2 to 3 years, per HomeGuide.
