Worked examples: patios

Area is length times width. A 20x20 patio is 20 × 20 = 400 square feet.

Paver patio costs by size
Patio sizeAreaHomeGuide total
10x10100 sq ft$950 to $1,700
12x12144 sq ft$1,400 to $2,500
20x20400 sq ft$3,800 to $6,800
400 sq ft (any shape)400 sq ftabout $4,000 to $6,800

Totals are HomeGuide's published figures (HomeGuide). Its 400 square foot total matches the $10 to $17 rate × 400 ($4,000 to $6,800), while its 20x20 total, also 400 square feet, starts at $3,800. The ranges are not exact, which is a reason to get itemized quotes.

Worked examples: driveways

HomeGuide lists installed pavers at $10 to $30 per square foot. At that rate a 20x20 driveway (400 sq ft) is $4,000 to $12,000, and a 24x24 two-car driveway (576 sq ft) is $5,760 to $17,280. HomeGuide's own two-car paver driveway total is $5,700 to $17,200 (HomeGuide).

For larger jobs, multiply the area. 1,000 square feet at $10 to $30 is $10,000 to $30,000. The Los Angeles-area contractor guide lists $18 to $45 per square foot for California patios (Ridgeline Outdoor Living). We show only its per-square-foot range, because the totals in that guide do not match simple multiplication.

What moves the price

  • Excavation and base depth. HomeGuide lists 4 to 6 inches of base for pedestrian areas and 6 to 12 inches for driveways. Deeper bases take more material and labor.
  • Paver type. Concrete, clay brick, natural stone and porcelain differ in cost. HomeGuide lists permeable pavers at $4 to $12 per square foot for materials.
  • Pattern and borders. HomeGuide notes that pattern complexity and cuts raise labor cost.
  • Edging and drainage. HomeGuide lists edging at about $0.10 to $0.20 per square foot, plus grading at $0.40 to $2.00.
  • Access and delivery. HomeGuide lists delivery at about $0.50 per square foot.
  • Sealing. Optional, at about $1.50 to $3.25 per square foot.
  • Permits. We don't state local permit rules. Ask your contractor and your city.

What to ask a contractor to itemize
